Onice Miele: Geological Origin and Quarrying Areas

Onice Miele, also known as yellow onyx, is a variety of carbonate onyx, a sedimentary rock formed by deposits of calcium carbonate. In the case of Onice Miele, it is a carbonate rock composed mainly of calcite in cryptocrystalline form, which gives the material uniformity and good translucency. The calcitic mass often forms irregular oolitic structures, rounded or oval in shape, characterized by concentric zoning.

Onice Miele has a compact, massive structure and a slightly distinct, streaked texture. The calcite crystals that compose the onyx are thin and elongated, with shapes similar to straw fibers, crystallized diagonally with respect to the stratification.

The shades of Onice Miele can vary across a wide range of colors and tones, from cream to brownish yellow.

Onice Miele blocks are extracted from the most superficial layers (up to 30 meters), in quarries located in different geographic areas. Depending on the extraction area, the slabs show different chromatic characteristics and levels of translucency:

  • Pakistan: Onice Miele with intense honey tones, marked veining, excellent translucency. Considered premium quality.
  • Western Macedonia: The main quarry is located in the Kozjak Mountains; material with dark yellow/amber tones.
  • Iran: Slightly lighter colors, from straw yellow to amber. Good homogeneity.
  • Mexico: Finer veining, color tending toward greenish yellow. Less translucent.
  • Turkey: Variable tones, often with reddish inclusions. Mid-range price level.

Technical and Aesthetic Properties of Onice Miele

Onice Miele is a relatively hard stone, with low water absorption and a bulk density that classifies it within the group of hard decorative stones, with a frost resistance coefficient within normal limits.

Its physical and mechanical properties require particular attention during the design and installation phases.

Below are the main technical characteristics of Onice Miele slabs:

Test typeUnit
Average compressive strength in dry conditions55,23 MPa
Average compressive strength after 25 freeze–thaw cycles48,66 MPa
Average strength index parallel to the stratification of onyx in dry conditions1,55 MPa
Average bulk density value26,78 kN/m³ (pietra dura).
Frost resistance coefficientKm = 48,66 / 55,23 = 0,84
Compressive strength classification moderately resistant rockresistente (50–100 MPa)

Ideal Processing and Finishes for Onice Miele Slabs

Onice Miele is mainly used with a polished surface finish, as this processing maximizes the beauty and chromatic depth of the material, enhancing its veining and natural transparency.

Since it is often used in backlit applications, the polished finish helps create a more elegant, bright and luminous effect, amplifying light diffusion and the intensity of the color shades. This aesthetic result would not be achievable with a brushed or honed finish, which tends to reduce the brilliance and depth effect of onyx.
Over time, onyx may lose part of its shine in areas subject to greater contact or wear. However, the surface can be restored through professional repolishing processes, which bring back brightness and uniformity.

Onice Miele: Projects and Areas of Application

Onice Miele expresses its maximum aesthetic potential in applications where light becomes an integral part of the project. Its golden veining and natural translucency make it a standout material in high-end contract and residential environments.

The main contexts of use for Onice Miele are:

Backlit Walls

When backlit, Onice Miele becomes particularly scenic. LED strips or light panels placed behind 2–3 cm slabs create lighting effects that change with the intensity of the light.

Backlit Onice Miele slabs are ideal for:
– Hotel halls and receptions
– Spas and wellness centers
– Luxury retail spaces and showrooms
– Partition walls in executive offices

Bathroom Tops and Washbasins

Onice Miele gives bathrooms a warm and enveloping atmosphere. Natural or artificial light enhances its golden veins. Due to the medium-high porosity of the material, the use for bathroom tops and sinks requires frequent care with specific waterproofing products.

Bar Counters, Reception Desks and Worktops

Backlit from below or from the side, Onice Miele counters create striking focal points and are therefore particularly effective for cocktail bars and lounges, hotel receptions, or welcome desks in spas and beauty centers. However, the technical characteristics of the material do not make it suitable for kitchen worktops with intensive use and it is not recommended in environments with frequent contact with alcohol, wine, lemon, or acidic products.

Wall Cladding and Decorative Panels
Applied as decorative wall cladding, Onice Miele adds depth and warmth to interior spaces.

FAQ

  • Is Onice Miele suitable for kitchen countertops?
It is not recommended for everyday kitchen use. Its sensitivity to acids makes it vulnerable to lemon, wine, vinegar and tomato, and it is easily scratched by pots and cut by knives. It may work in show kitchens or luxury vacation homes with occasional use, provided the client is aware of the need for frequent maintenance.
  • Can Onice Miele be used outdoors?
It is strongly discouraged. Onyx stones are porous and sensitive to frost. Freeze–thaw cycles cause internal microfractures that lead to rapid deterioration of the material. In addition, acid rain attacks calcium carbonate, causing dullness, erosion and loss of polish within a few months. There are no protective treatments capable of preserving the material outdoors.
  • How long does the polish of Onice Miele slabs usually last?
The durability depends heavily on use and maintenance.Generally:
Vertical applications (walls): the polish can last for many years.
Bathroom tops (residential use): about 3–5 years, after which the most used areas may become dull.
Bathroom tops (hotel use): about 1–2 years, requiring periodic repolishing.
Bar counters/reception desks: 6–18 months in areas with frequent contact.
Professional repolishing can restore the original appearance of the surface.
  • Are there quality differences between onyx from different quarries?
Yes. Origin influences color, compactness and price. Alberti & Alberti selects Onice Miele from certified suppliers, favoring materials with good translucency and without structural defects such as fractures, weak spots or opaque areas.
  • Is it possible to obtain book-matched slabs?
Yes, but it requires planning. Book matching is achieved by cutting the onyx block so that two consecutive slabs, when opened like a book, create a mirrored image. This effect is particularly scenic with Onice Miele slabs, where golden veining creates symmetrical patterns of great visual impact. On request, Alberti & Alberti can produce book-matched slabs.
